Als Tim McGraw zu Beginn der neunziger Jahre auf der Bildfläche erschien, dachte sicherlich kaum jemand daran, dass er eines Tages Garth Brooks als populärsten Sänger der Country Music ablösen würde. Genau dies hat er jedoch dank einer Reihe von Mehrfach-Platin-Alben und der Aufsehen erregenden Heirat mit Superstar Faith Hill geschafft. Allerdings spielte auch der immer größere Popularitätsverlust Brooks' sicherlich eine Rolle. McGraws Musik war der Inbegriff des im letzten Jahrzehnt dominierenden kommerziellen Country-Sounds: Auf den neuesten Stand gebrachter Honky Tonk und "Southern Fried"-Countryrock bei den Uptempo-Songs, geschliffener, auf den Adult-Markt zielender Pop bei den Balladen. Nachdem seine Karriere am Anfang nur zögernd in Fahrt kam, gelang es ihm mit der Zeit besser als allen Kollegen, kontinuierlich eingängige Hits zu schreiben. Ende der Neunziger war er nicht nur in der Country-Szene ein Superstar, sondern auch im Mainstream eine Berühmtheit mit einer großen Zahl weiblicher Fans.

Samuel Timothy McGraw wurde am 1. Mai 1967 in Delhi, Louisiana, geboren. Erst einige Jahre später erfuhr er, dass er der Sohn des erfolgreichen Baseballspielers Tug McGraw war, mit dem seine Mutter eine kurze Affäre gehabt hatte. Er wuchs in der Kleinstadt Start in Louisiana auf und hörte in seiner Kindheit und Jugend Country, Pop, Rock und R&B. Mit Hilfe eines Baseball-Stipendiums besuchte er die Northeast Louisiana University und studierte dort Sportmedizin. Erst jetzt begann er, Gitarre zu spielen, um sich selbst zu begleiten. Er spielte in den lokalen Clubs und machte sich schließlich 1989 am selben Tag nach Nashville auf, an dem sein Idol Keith Whitley starb. Zwei Jahre lang sang er in den dortigen Clubs, bis er 1992 bei Curb Records unterschrieb und seine Debütsingle "Welcome to the Club" herausbrachte, die zu einem kleinen Hit wurde. 1993 erschien sein erstes Album, das allerdings floppte. McGraws Glück wendete sich jedoch mit seinem nächsten, 1994 erschienenen Album "Not A Moment Too Soon" und dessen Leadsingle "Indian Outlaw", die die Gemüter spaltete. Während der Track für die Fans ein fröhlich-unbekümmerter Novelty-Song war, musste sich McGraw von anderer Seite vorwerfen lassen, er karikiere darin auf abfällige Weise die amerikanischen Ureinwohner. Obwohl sich einige Radiosender weigerten, den Song zu spielen, erreichte er die Country-Top-Ten und kletterte sogar unter die ersten Zwanzig der Pop-Charts. Durch die Publicity wurde McGraws nächste Single, die Ballade "Don't Take the Girl", in den Country-Charts bis auf Platz 1 katapultiert und konnte sich wie ihre Vorgängerin in den Top Twenty der Pop-Charts platzieren. Das Album warf noch weitere Hits ab: "Down on the Farm" erreichte Platz 2, der Titeltrack 1995 sogar Nummer 1, und auch das Novelty-Stück "Refried Dreams" ging in die Top Five. "Not a Moment Too Soon" entwickelte sich zu einem ausgewachsenen Blockbuster. Das Album verkaufte mehr als fünf Millionen Exemplare, kletterte sowohl in den Country- als auch in den Pop-Charts auf 1 und avancierte zum bestverkauften Country-Album des Jahres.

McGraws neu gewonnener Superstarstatus wurde durch das Folgealbum "All I Want" und den Nummer-1-Hit "I Like It, I Love It" zementiert. Das Album ging an die Spitze der Country-Charts, erreichte die Top Five der Pop-Charts und verkaufte sich mehr als zwei Millionen Mal. Auch die übrigen aus ihm ausgekoppelten Singles wurden veritable Hits: "Can't Be Really Gone" erreichte Platz 2, "She Never Lets It Go to Her Heart" kletterte auf 1, und "All I Want Is a Life" und "Maybe We Should Just Sleep on It" knackten immerhin noch die Top Five. 1996 promotete McGraw das Album mit einer ausgedehnten Tour, bei der Faith Hill als Opening Act auftrat. Im Oktober, nach dem Ende der Tour, gaben sich McGraw und Hill das Jawort. Die Heirat der beiden Country-Megastars stieß in den Medien auf immenses Interesse, wovon McGraws 97er Werk "Everywhere" zweifellos profitierte. Auch dieses Album wurde zu einem Crossover-Smash. Es toppte die Country-Charts, kam in den Pop-Charts auf Platz 2 und ging vier Millionen Mal über den Ladentisch. Als Leadsingle wurde "It's Your Love" ausgekoppelt, ein Duett mit Hill. Die Single wurde fast schon unausweichlich Nummer 1 der Country-Charts und erreichte auch die Pop-Top-Ten. Das Album bescherte McGraw mit "Everywhere", "Where the Green Grass Grows" und "Just to See You Smile" noch drei weitere Nummer-1-Hits, während "One of These Days" und "For A Little While" auf Platz 2 kamen. Währenddessen kletterte "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me", ein weiteres Duett des Paares aus Hills 98er Album "Faith", unter die ersten Fünf.

Durch den Erfolg des mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichneten "Everywhere" wurde McGraw endgültig zum König des zeitgenössischen Country und stieß damit Garth Brooks vom Thron, der die Wachablösung mit seinem Chris Gaines-Projekt, das viele seiner Fans irritierte, noch beschleunigte. McGraw produzierte währenddessen weiter Hit an Hit. Sein nächstes Album, das 1999 erschienene "A Place in the Sun" (Dreifach-Platin), toppte sowohl die Country- als auch die Pop-Charts und warf vier Nummer-1-Singles ab: "Please Remember Me" (mit Patty Loveless), "Something Like That", "My Best Friend" und "My Next Thirty Years". 2000 erschienen McGraws erste Greatest-Hits-Compilation, die natürlich wieder zum Bestseller wurde, und ein weiteres Top-Ten-Duett aus Faith Hills "Breathe"-Album, "Let's Make Love". Der Song bescherte McGraw später in der Rubrik Best Country Vocal Collaboration seinen ersten Grammy. 2000 kam der Sänger allerdings auch mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt. Er und Tourmate Kenny Chesney gerieten mit Polizeibeamten aneinander, nachdem Chesney versucht hatte, auf einem der Polizeipferde zu reiten. Im weiteren Verlauf wurde McGraw allerdings vom Vorwurf, er habe einen tätlichen Angriff begangen, entlastet. Den Rest des Jahres ging er zum zweiten Mal zusammen mit Faith Hill auf Tournee. 2001 setzte McGraw seine Hitserie mit dem Album "Set This Circus Down" (Nummer 1 in den Country-, Nummer 2 in den Popcharts) fort. Auch aus diesem Album wurden mit "Grown Men Don't Cry", "Angry All the Time", "The Cowboy in Me" und "Unbroken" vier Nummer-1-Hits ausgekoppelt. 2002 verbuchte er eine weitere Nummer 1 mit "Bring on the Rain", einem Duett mit Schützling Jo Dee Messina. Für sein nächstes Album ging McGraw nicht wie sonst im Country-Bereich üblich mit Session-Musikern ins Studio, sondern mit seiner Road-Band, den Dancehall Doctors, die bereits seit 1996 zusammen spielten (einige Mitglieder waren sogar schon vorher aktiv). "Tim McGraw" wurde Ende 2002 veröffentlicht und warf mit "Red Rag Top" und "She's My Kind of Rain" zwei Top-Ten-Hits ab. Das Album enthält auch eine überraschend originalgetreue Version von Elton Johns "Tiny Dancer".

Am 17. Oktober 2006 bekamt er seinen ersten Stern auf dem legendären Hollywood Walk of Fame. Vor dem Gebäude 6901 Hollywood Boulevard, in der Nähe der Sterne von Julie Andrews, William Shatner und Greta Garbo.

Mit seinem Album "Emotional Traffic" endete, laut Ansicht von Tim McGraw, sein Vertrag mit Curb Records. Corb hingegen behauptet, dass Tim McGraw noch ein weiteres Album abliefern muss. Die Fronten sind so verhärtet, dass ein Gericht die Sachlage klären muss. Im Rahmen eines Voraburteils wurde Tim McGraw 2012 erlaubt einen neuen Plattenvertrag zu unterschreiben und unter dem neuen Vertrag Musik zu veröffentlichen. McGraw nutzte die Chance und unterschrieb bei Big Machine Records.
