In der Country City arbeitete und sang Travis mehrere Jahre lang. Auch gegen Ende seiner Teenagerzeit kam er regelmäßig mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt, so dass ihn der Richter schließlich eindringlich ermahnte, er werde ihn beim nächsten Fehltritt für lange Zeit hinter Gitter bringen. Anschließend wurde Travis in die Obhut von Lib Hatcher entlassen, die kurze Zeit später seine Managerin wurde. Das Paar begann, konzentriert an seiner Karriere zu arbeiten. Mit Unterstützung von Joey Stampley erhielt Travis 1978 einen Plattenvertrag bei Paula Records. Im folgenden Jahr veröffentlichte er dort unter seinem Geburtsnamen zwei Singles, von denen sich "She's My Woman" in den unteren Rängen der Country-Charts platzieren konnte.
1982 zogen Travis und Hatcher nach Nashville, wo sie den Nachtclub Nashville Palace managte, während er sang und kochte. Nach zwei Jahren veröffentlichte das Paar sein unter dem Namen Randy Ray aufgenommenes Debütalbum "Randy Ray Live", ein Independent-Werk, das hauptsächlich im Nashville Palace verkauft wurde.
Dank dieses Albums und Hatchers hartnäckiger Arbeit wurde Travis 1985 von Warner Brothers unter Vertrag genommen. Dort schlug man ihm vor, seinen Künstlernamen in "Randy Travis" zu ändern. Seine erste Single für Warner, "On the Other Hand", erschien im Sommer 1985 und erreichte in den Charts gerade einmal Position 67. Obwohl das Werk in kommerzieller Hinsicht also nicht gerade Bäume ausriss, waren die Radiostationen von Travis begeistert. Seine nächste Single, das im Herbst erschienene "1982", stieg bereits bis auf Platz 6. Auf der Basis dieses Erfolgs wurde "On the Other Hand" im Frühjahr 1986 wiederveröffentlicht und im zweiten Anlauf zu einem Nummer-1-Hit.
Im Sommer 1986 erschien schließlich Travis' erstes Major-Album "Storms of Life", das zu einem riesigen Erfolg wurde und sich mehr als drei Millionen Mal verkaufte. Travis war der erste Country-Interpret, der mehrfach Platin erhielt, während zuvor die meisten Künstler des Genres Schwierigkeiten gehabt hatten, auch nur Goldstatus zu erreichen. Ende der Achtziger dominierte Travis die Szene und bereitete mit seinem Massenappeal den Boden für den Crossover-Erfolg der Country-Musik Anfang der neunziger Jahre. Die letzten beiden Singles aus "Storm of Life", "Diggin' Up Bones" und "No Place Like Home", erreichten Platz 1 bzw. 2. Mit "Forever and Ever, Amen", der ersten Auskoppelung aus seinem nächsten Album "Always & Forever" aus dem Jahr 1987, begann dann eine bis 1989 anhaltende Serie von sieben Nummer-1-Singles hintereinander. "Always & Forever" war noch erfolgreicher als der Vorgänger. Das Album erreichte Platz 19 in den Pop-Charts und erhielt Vierfachplatin. Es bescherte ihm zudem den Male Vocalist of the Year-Award der Country Music Association (CMA). Die nächsten Alben "Old 8x10" (1988) und "No Holdin' Back" (1989) waren zwar nicht ganz so erfolgreich, warfen aber immer noch Nummer-1-Singles ab und erhielten Platin.
Auch zu Beginn der Neunziger zeigten sich zunächst keine Abnutzungserscheinungen. Travis startete in das neue Jahrzehnt mit seinem größten Hit "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart". Seine Dominanz in den Charts geriet jedoch ins Wanken, als Clint Black und Garth Brooks auf der Bildfläche erschienen. Allerdings erlebte Travis nie einen richtigen Absturz. Seine Alben erreichten regelmäßig Goldstatus und stiegen in die Top Ten. Als Misserfolg gilt lediglich sein 92er Werk "Wind in the Wire", der Soundtrack zu seinem TV-Special. Keine der daraus ausgekoppelten Singles erreichte die Top Forty. Das 1994 veröffentlichte "This Is Me" brachte ihn wieder zurück in die Erfolgsspur: "Whisper My Name" war seine erste Nummer-1-Single seit zwei Jahren. Im August 1996 erschien mit "Full Circle" sein letztes Album für Warner Brothers. 1997 unterschrieb er beim damals noch jungen Label DreamWorks. Sein erstes Album für sein neues Label, "You and You Alone", stand im Frühjahr 1998 in den Läden. Ein Jahr später folgte "Man Ain't Made of Stone". Ende 2000 veröffentlichte Travis dann mit "Inspirational Journey" eine LP mit traditionellen und zeitgenössischen religiösen Songs. Das Album wurde 2001 bei den 32. Annual Dove Awards der Gospel Music Association zum Country/Bluegrass Album of the Year gekürt. Der Song "Baptism" erhielt zudem die Auszeichnung Recorded Song of the Year. Einige Stücke des Albums fanden zudem Eingang in das Finale der Fantasy-Serie "Touched by an Angel" (dt. Titel "Ein Hauch von Himmel"), in der Travis als Gastdarsteller mitwirkte. Zwei Jahre später setzte er mit "Rise and Shine" erneut auf Gospel.
