Lee Ann Womack

Nachdem sie einige Jahre als professionelle Songschreiberin tätig gewesen war, schaffte Lee Ann Womack schließlich 1997 mit ihrem Debüt-Album "Lee Ann Womack" den Durchbruch zum Star des "Contemporary Country".

Womack wurde in Jacksonville, im U.S.-amerikanischen Bundesstaat Texas, geboren und wuchs dort auch auf. Wie es sich für die Tochter eines Diskjockeys gehört, entwickelte Womack schon sehr früh große Begeisterung für die Musik. Ihr Vater nahm sie häufig mit zur Arbeit, wo sie die Platten aussuchen durfte, die er dann auflegte. Nach ihrem Highschool Abschluss besuchte sie das South Plains Junior College in Levelland im U.S.-amerikanischen Bundesstaat Texas. Diese Schule gehörte zu den ersten Schulen Amerikas, an denen man einen Abschluss in "Country" und "Bluegrass"-Musik machen konnte. Womack wurde schon bald Mitglied der College-Band "Country Caravan". Gemeinsam mit dieser Band tourte sie durch den Süden Amerikas sowie durch Kalifornien und blieb so lange bei "Country Caravan", bis sie South Plains verließ, um an der Belmont University in Nashville Musik Business [ein Studiengang, der die Absolventen dazu befähigt, z.B. als Manager von Musikern tätig zu werden] zu studieren. Auf diese Weise bekam sie die Möglichkeit, ein Praktikum in der A&R [Künstler und Repertoire] Abteilung von MCA Nashville zu absolvieren.

1990 zog sie nach Nashville, heiratete und bekam ein Kind. Nach wie vor setzte sie jedoch ihr Studium in Belmont fort und schrieb eigene Songs. Bald darauf begann sie damit, die Demo-Bänder ihrer Songs selbst aufzunehmen und stellte ihre Songs auch selbst anderen Künstlern "live" vor. Auf einer solchen Demo-Veranstaltung wurde Womack schließlich von "Tree Publishing" entdeckt. Nachdem die Plattenfirma sich ihre Demo-Bänder angehört hatte, bekam Womack 1995 einen Vertrag als Songwriterin für Tree. In der Zeit, in der sie dort engagiert war, schrieb sie nebenher auch gemeinsam mit Künstlern wie Ed Hill, Bill Anderson, Sam Hogin, und Mark Wright weitere Songs. Sänger wie Anderson und Ricky Skaggs machten die von ihr geschriebenen Songs berühmt.

Nur ein Jahr nach Unterzeichnung ihres Vertrags bei Tree bekam Lee Ann Womack ihren eigenen Plattenvertrag bei "Decca Records". Als Produzent für Womacks Debut-Album konnte Mark Wright gewonnen werden. Dieses Debut-Album enthielt sowohl von Womack, als auch von professionellen anderen Songschreibern geschriebene, Songs. Nicht zuletzt die in dem Album enthaltenen Aufnahmen mit Künstlern wie Mark Chesnutt , Ricky Skaggs, Sharon White, und Tony Brown führten zu einem durchschlagenden Erfolg.

"Lee Ann Womack" wurde im Mai 1997 veröffentlicht und schaffte es bereits kurz darauf in die Top Ten der Country Charts. "I Hope You Dance" erschien sodann Mitte des Jahres 2000. Mitte des Jahres 2002 kam "Something Worth Leaving Behind" in die Plattenläden und es war sicherlich die richtige Entscheidung für Womack, sich endgültig der "Mainstream Country"-Musik zu verschreiben. Noch vor Jahresende wurde "A Season for Romance" veröffentlicht, aber dann verspürte Womack immer stärker den Drang, im Rampenlicht zu stehen, und sich auch als Schauspielerin einen Namen zu machen. Im Frühjahr 2003 übernahm Womack eine Nebenrolle in dem auf CBS ausgestrahlten Fernsehfilm "The District". Außerdem wurde sie 2003 für zwei Grammies nominiert: als beste Country Lead-Sängerin bei dem Song "Something Worth Leaving Behind" und für das beste Country-Duett "Mendocino County Line", das sie gemeinsam mit Willie Nelson aufgenommen hatte.
