Seine Mutter war erst 19 Jahre alt, als sie mit Rodney Atkins schwanger wurde. Sie versteckte die Schwangerschaft vor ihren Eltern und gab Atkins zur Adoption frei. Seine ersten Adoptiveltern, Charles Hutchins und Linda Weems, machten die Adoption rückgängig, als Atkins an einer Infektion der Atemwege erkrankte. Auch das zweite Elternpaar wollte den Jungen nicht behalten und gab ihn an die Adoptionsstelle zurück, nachdem er an einer Kolik erkrankt. Da aber bekanntlich aller guten Dinge Drei sind, bekamen Allan und Margaret Atkins den jungen Rodney und wurden seine liebevollen Eltern.
Während seiner High-School-Zeit begann Atkins Musik zu machen und trat schon sehr früh in der näheren Umgebung auf. Während seiner Studienzeit an der Tennessee Tech in Cookeville ging er immer wieder nach Nashville, Tennessee, und trat dort in Clubs auf.
Mitte der 90er zog er nach Nashville, um an seiner Musikkarriere zu arbeiten. 1996 unterschrieb er seinen Plattenvertrag bei Curb Records und begann mit Aufnahmen für sein Debüt-Album, "Rodney Atkins", das nie veröffentlicht wurde. Grund hierfür dürfte gewesen sein, dass seine beiden ersten Singles, "In a Heartbeat" und " God Only Knows ", floppten.
1998 heirate Atkins Tammy Jo McDonald, die zwei Kinder, Lindsey und Morgan, mit in die Ehe brachte.
Nach einer kreative Pause schickte er 2002, in dem Jahr als auch sein Sohn Elijah geboren wurde, neue Songs ans Country-Radio: "Sing Along" und "My Old Man", die beide irgendwo im Mittelfeld landeten. Mit der nächsten Single-Auskopplung, "Honesty (Write Me a List)", konnte er endlich einen Hit landeten und stieg bis auf Platz 4 der Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts.Ende 2003 folgte dann auch das Album "Honesty", das es aber nur bis auf Platz 50 derBillboard Country Album Charts schaffte. Die nächsten zwei Singles, "Someone to Share It With" und "Monkey in the Middle", die 2004 veröffentlicht wurden, spielten wieder keine größere Rolle in den Charts.
Das änderte sich schlagartig 2006 als "If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)" veröffentlicht wurde. Die Single stieg bis auf Platz 1 derBillboard Hot Country Songs Charts und wurde inzwischen mit Gold, für 500.000 digitale Downloads, ausgezeichnet. Das dazugehörige Album "If You're Going Through Hell" erreichte Platz 1 in den Billboard Country Album Charts und Platz 3 in den Billboard Hot 200 Charts (alle Genres). Nicht nur das, es brachte auch drei weitere Nummer 1 Singles hervor: "Watching You", "These Are My People" und "These Are My People", die alle entweder mit Gold oder Platin ausgezeichnet wurden.
2008 schickte er dann die erste Single, "It's America", aus dem gleichnamigen neuen Album an die Country-Radios und landete prompt wieder auf Platz 1 der Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts. Im selben Jahr lernte Atkins seine biologische Mutter kennen, gab aber nicht ihre Identität preis.
Im Oktober 2011 veröffentlichte er sein nächstes Album, "Take a Back Road", das es, wie sein Vorgänger, auf Platz 3 der Billboard Country Album Charts schaffte. Kurz danach beschuldigte ihn seine Frau des Mordversuchs, aber das Gericht eröffnete kein Verfahren gegen Rodney Atkins. Der Vorfall wurde nur öffentlich, da Atkins die Scheidung von Tammy Jo beantragt hat.
