Es ist ausgerechnet ein Festakt zu Ehren der ersten Lufteinheit der US Army, der Morgans Sangeskarriere neu beflügelt: Morgan schreibt einen Song über diese tapferen Pioniere, der seinen Vorgesetzten so gut gefällt, dass sie ihn bitten, diesen doch beim Festbankett zum Besten zu geben. In Korea, wo Morgan einige Zeit an der ROK Ranger School stationiert ist, gewinnt seine Musikerkarriere weiter an Fahrt: Morgan gewinnt einige Songwriter- und Sängerwettbewerbe und spielt im Vorprogramm von Sawyer Brown.
Zurück in den Staaten, nimmt er mit seinem Vater, ebenfalls begeisterter Countrysänger, ein paar Demos auf. Darunter auch viele Selbstgeschriebene Stücke. Doch es gestaltet sich nach Ende seiner aktiven Zeit in der Army schwierig, als reiner Countrysänger den Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Die Jobs als Auftragssänger für die Kompositionen anderer Songschreiber oder für die diversen Musikverlage in Nashville reichen nicht aus, um die Familie durchzubringen. Also verdingt sich Morgan in dieser Zeit als Security-Fachmann, als Bauarbeiter und sogar als Verkäufer bei Wall-Mart. Doch der Country lässt ihn nicht mehr los: Acht Monate lang steht er im Country Tonight Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee auf der Bühne. Nebenbei schreibt er Songs, was das Zeug hält.
Morgan landet seinen ersten Plattenvertrag bei dem Label Atlantic, wo 2000 sein erstes, selbstbetiteltes Album erscheint. Solide produziert von Buddy Cannon und Norro Wilson, erreicht die Single "I Want Us Back" erstes Airplay bei den einschlägigen Countrystationen. Craig Morgan tourt mit LeAnn Rimes, Brad Paisley und gastiert mehrfach im Grand Ole Opry. Er singt Duette mit zweien seiner Helden, John Conlee und George Jones. Danach unterschreibt Morgan einen neuen Plattenvertrag bei Broken Bow Records und veröffentlicht 2003 "I Love It". Das Album schafft es bis in die Top 10, nicht zuletzt dank der Single "Almost Home". Der mit Kerry Kurt Phillips geschriebene Song wird ausgezeichnet mit dem angesehenen Music Row "Song Of The Year"-Preis und Morgan empfängt den "Songwriter Achievement Award" der Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).
Während des zweiten Golfkriegs bezieht der US-Army-Veteran Morgan klar Stellung: Obwohl bereits 38 Jahre alt und Vater von fünf Kindern, würde er ohne zu zögern im Irak kämpfen, sagt er: "Wenn sie mich morgen anrufen, und sagen sie brauchen mich, dann würde ich gehen: Glücklich und voller Stolz, und ohne irgendwelche Bedenken." Zuvor war Morgan bereits in Afghanistan bei den dort stationierten Truppen gewesen. Allerdings nicht um zu kämpfen: Er gab Konzerte als Teil der Truppenbetreuung der US Army.
Craig Morgans drittes Album, "My Kind of Livin'" erscheint 2005: Acht der zwölf Songs hat Craig Morgan selbst geschrieben, u.a. mit Hilfe seines Co-Produzenten Phil O'Donnell, mit Tim Owens, Craig Morris, Galen Griffin, Jimmy Yeary, Shane Minor und erneut mit Kerry Kurt Phillips. Ein paar Rocker, ein paar herzerweichende Balladen, und meist gute, alte Countrymusic, zu der man die Kumpels zu einem gepflegten Bud Light einladen möchte. Sein Song "That's What I Love About Sunday" mausert sich zu Craig Morgans erstem Nummer-Eins-Hit in den Billboard Country Single Charts.
2007 verlies er das Independent-Label Broken Bow Records und wechselte zum Major-Label BNA (Sony Music). Allerdings konnte Craig Morgan nicht mehr an seine Erfolge anknüpfen und verlor den Vertrag nach nur einem Album, "That's Why", wieder.
