Steve Wariner gilt als einer der vielfältigsten Country-Interpreten. Er wuchs am Stadtrand von Indianapolis auf, hörte viel Radio und interessierte sich für die Beatles, jedoch auch für Chet Atkins und Ein deutlicher Karrieresprung fand statt, als Wariner Ende 1984 von RCA zu MCA Nashville wechselte. Seine erste Single für das neue Label, "What I Didn't Do", schaffte es Anfang 1985 in die Top 5. Es war nur der Anfang einer Serie aufeinander folgender Top-10-Hits - darunter die Chartstürmer "Some Fools Never Learn", "You Can Dream of Me", "Life's Highway", "Small Town Girl", "The Weekend", "Lynda", sowie "Where Did I Go Wrong" und "I Got Dreams", beide Eigenkompositionen von Wariner. Die Erfolgssträhne hielt bis 1990 an, als er zu Arista Nashville wechselte. Auf dem neuen Label konnte er anfangs beachtliche Erfolge feiern. Sein erstes Album auf Arista, "I Am Ready", erreichte Platinstatus (keines seiner bisherigen Alben erreichte Gold), und seine ersten drei Arista-Singles schafften es in die Top 10. Außerdem erhielt er 1991 zusammen mit Ricky Skaggs und Vince Gill den Grammy Award für die beste gesangliche Zusammenarbeit im Country ("Restless"). Das Stück erschien auf Mark O'Connors Album "The New Nashville Cats".
Wariner gelang im Sommer 1993 mit "If I Didn't Love You" ein Country-Top-10-Hit, seine Plattenverkäufe begannen jedoch zu sinken. Sein 1996er Instrumentalalbum "No More Mr. Nice Guy", seine erste Veröffentlichung seit drei Jahren, erreichte nicht die Charts. Wariner wurde aber in die Grand Ole Opry aufgenommen. 1997 sang er zusammen mit Anita Cochran auf "What if I Said", und die Single stieg Anfang 1998 an die Spitze der Country-Charts, kurz nachdem Garth Brooks' Aufnahme des Wariner-Songs "Longneck Bottle" auf Nummer 1 geklettert war. Der Doppelerfolg gab seiner Karriere neuen Antrieb. Er unterschrieb bei Capitol Nashville, Garth Brooks' Label, und veröffentlichte "Holes in the Floor of Heaven". Das Stück schaffte es in die Country-Top-5 und gewann die Auszeichnungen "Song of the Year" und "Single of the Year" der Country Music Association. "Burnin' the Roadhouse Down", sein Debütalbum für Capitol, kletterte in die Country-Top-10 und erreichte Goldstatus. Das Album bescherte Wariner einen genreübergreifenden Erfolg - es stieg in die Top-50 der Pop-Album-Charts ein. 1999 folgte "Two Teardrops", das ebenfalls Goldstatus erreichte. Im selben Jahr teilte er sich mit der Band Asleep at the Wheel seinen zweiten Grammy-Award für den Song "Bob's Breakdown". Sein drittes Album bei Capitol, "Faith in You", erschien im Mai 2000.
2000 veröffentlichte er zusammen mit Clint Black das Duett "Been There", mit dem er auch in Deutschland seinen Bekanntheitsgrad steigern konnte.
Anschließend wurde es etwas ruhiger um Wariner, der 2003 sein eigenes Plattenlabel SelecTone Records gründete und dort mit "Steal Another Day", "Guitar Christmas" und "This Real Life" inzwischen drei Alben veröffentlichte. 2008 rückte er wieder in das Licht der Öffentlichkeit zurück, als er auf dem Album "Play" von Brad Paisley direkt mehrfach zu hören ist, unter anderem mit dem Duett "More Than Just This Song".
