Tracy Byrds Interpretation eines neuen traditionellen Country machte ihn in den 90ern zum Star, vor allem seine verspielten Gute-Laune-Partysongs zum Mitsingen (obwohl er auch mit seinen Balladen gelegentlich erfolgreich war).
Tracy Byrd wurde 1966 im kleinen ländlichen Ort Vidor,Texas, geboren und hörte in seiner Kindheit die umfangreiche Country-Schallplattensammlung seiner Familie. Mit 20 Jahren besuchte er ein neuartiges Aufnahmestudio in einem Einkaufszentrum und sang in Karaoke-Manier zu einem Track von "Your Cheatin' Heart". Die Verkäuferin war so beeindruckt, dass sie ihn zu einem Auftritt in einer Talente-Show einlud. Als Byrd gut ankam, beschloss er, die Country Music zu seiner Berufung zu machen. Er brach das College ab und stieg bei Mark Chesnutts Band ein. Letzten Endes ersetzte er sogar Mark Chesnutt als regelmäßigen Stargast in einem beliebten Club in Beaumont, Texas.
Auf der Suche nach einem Plattenvertrag unternahm er eine erste, allerdings erfolglose Reise nach Nashville. Doch schon beim zweiten Mal konnte er sich ein privates Vorsingen vor führenden Mitarbeitern von MCA Nashville sichern und wurde sofort von ihnen unter Vertrag genommen. 1993 brachte Byrd sein Debüt-Album, das seinen eigenen Namen trägt, heraus. Es war zwar kein Kassenschlager, aber mit seiner dritten Single, dem Platz eins "Holdin' Heaven", machte der Künstler richtig auf sich aufmerksam. Das Nachfolgealbum, "No Ordinary Man" (1994), war sein kommerzieller Durchbruch; es ging mehr als zwei Millionen Mal über den Ladentisch, nicht zuletzt dank vier Top-Five-Hits: die Tanzscheiben "Watermelon Crawl", "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous" und "The First Step" sowie die Ballade mit wechselnden Taktarten "The Keeper of the Stars", die in Countryfan-Kreisen die Hochzeitshymne schlechthin wurde.
1995 setzte Byrd seinem Erfolg mit "Love Lessons" (1995) sofort noch ein Album drauf. Zwar konnten Singles wie "Walking to Jerusalem" und "4 to 1 in Atlanta" den unglaublichen Erfolg ihrer Vorgänger nicht erreichen, doch trugen sie dazu bei, dass sich das Album bis zum respektablen Gold-Niveau verkaufte. Mit Big Love (1996) kehrte Byrd wieder in die Top Five der Singles-Charts zurück - mit dem Titelsong und "(Don't Take Her) She's All I Got"; der Titelsong von "I'm From the Country" (1998) schnitt ähnlich gut ab. Danach entschloss sich Byrd, von MCA Nashville zu RCA Nashville zu wechseln und brachte 1999 sein Label-Debüt mit "It's About Time" heraus. Auf diesem Album war eine weichere, poppigere Gangart in den Tracks zu hören - "Put Your Hand in Mine" (die erfolgreichste Single des Albums) etwa schaffte es fast in die Top Ten.
Byrd kehrte im nächsten Album "Ten Rounds" (2001) trotzdem wieder zum geradlinigen, gut gelaunten Country zurück; die Fans dankten es ihm, indem sie die Single "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo" an der Spitze der Charts sehen wollten, wodurch Byrd seinen zweiten Platz eins feiern konnte. Auf dem Album sind außerdem der Top-Ten-Hit "Just Let Me Be in Love" und ein Duett mit Mark Chesnutt über das verspielt gegen Pop gerichtetes "A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side" zu hören.
Nach einer kleinen künstlerischen Pause und dem Weggang von RCA Nashville erschien 2006 das Album "Different Things" bei dem Indielabel Blind Mule.
Deutschland-Premiere feierte Byrd, als er März 2009 in bayrischen Four Corners auftrat. Ursprünglich war nur ein Konzert geplant, aber als die Tickets für das Club Konzert weggingen wie warme Semmeln, entschloss man sich, ein Zusatzkonzert anzusetzen, das ebenfalls ausverkauft war.
Nur etwas mehr als ein Jahr später, im April 2010, machte Byrd aus noch unbekannten Gründen Schluss mit seiner Musikkarriere. Die Facebook- und Twitter-Seite von Byrd wurden abgeschaltet und sein Fanclub nimmt zurzeit keine neuen Mitglieder auf. Der Country-Sänger hat alle Mitglieder seiner Band gefeuert und seinen Tourbus verkauft.
