Darius Rucker hat den genreübergreifenden Sprung in eine Solokarriere geschafft. Der Hootie and the Blowfish Mitbegründer wandelte erst auf R&B Solopfaden, bis er die Country Music für sich entdeckte und heute aus der Szene in Nashville nicht mehr wegzudenken ist.
Darius Carlos Rucker wurde am 13. Mai 1966 in Charleston, South Carolina geboren, besuchte die Middleton High School in seiner Heimatstadt und besuchte anschließend die University of South Carolina. Dort lernte er die drei Kommilitonen (Dean Felber, Jim "Soni" Sonefeld und Mark Bryan) kennen, mit denen er 1989 gemeinsam die Band Hootie and the Blowfish gründete.
1994 begann ihre Karriere und sie hatten mehrere Single-Hits und drei Top-5-Alben in den Vereinigten Staaten. Ihr Debüt-Album "Cracked Rear View" (1994) wurde ein sofortiger Erfolg und erreichte 16-fachen Platinstatus in den USA. Es war 1995 das meistverkaufte Album in den USA. Auf dem Album waren vier Single Hits, darunter "Only Wanna Be with You", das zu einem Streit mit Boby Dylan führte. 1995 einigte sich die Band mit Bob Dylan außergerichtlich über die unautorisierte Nutzung seines Textes zu "Only Wanna Be With You". Im folgenden Jahr gewann die Band den ersten Grammy als "Bester neuer Künstler".
1998 legte die Band eine Pause ein, die Rucker für ein Solo-Album nutzte. Das R&B-Album trug den Titel "The Return of Mongo Slade", aber die Veröffentlichung beim Bandlabel Atlantic scheiterte wegen vertraglichen Problemen, so dass das Solo-Album erst 2002 beim Independent-Label Hidden Beach unter dem Titel "Back to Then" erschien. Der Silberling ging aber sang und klanglos unter.
Es folgten dann wieder zwei Alben von Hootie and the Blowfish, die aber an den Erfolg der Vorgänger nicht anknüpfen konnten, daher löste sich die Band 2008 auf.
Darius Rucker konzentrierte sich wieder auf seine Solo-Karriere und unterschrieb zunächst einen Ein-Album-Vertrag bei Capitol Nashville. Seine erste Single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" erschien 2008 und stieg bis auf Platz 1 der Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts. Rucker war damit nach langer Zeit der erste Afro-Amerikaner, der es bis an die Spitze der Charts schaffte. Das war zuletzt Charley Pride im Jahre 1983 gelungen. Das Debüt-Album von Rucker "Learn to Live" konnte an den Erfolg anknüpfen und erreichte Platz 1 in den Billboard Country Album Charts. Das Album wurde in den USA inzwischen mit Platin, für eine Million an den Handel verschickte Tonträger, ausgezeichnet. "It Won't Be Like This for Long" wurde die zweite Nummer-Eins-Single in Folge.
Auch Ruckers zweites Country-Album, "Charleston, SC 1966", war in den Charts sehr erfolgreich, sogar einen Tick erfolgreicher als sein Vorgänger. Der Silberling stieg auf Platz 1 der Billboard Country Album Charts ein und erreichte Platz 2 in den Billboard Top 200 Charts (alle Genres). Das Album erreichte in den USA Gold-Status, für 500.000 an den Handel verschickte CDs. Auch die ersten zwei Single-Auskopplungen, "Come Back Song" und "I Got Nothin'", erhielten Gold, für 500.000 digitale Downloads in den USA.
Am 2. Oktober 2012 wurde Darius Rucker offizielles Mitglied der Grand Ole Opry. Im selben Jahr unterstütze er seine Label-Kollegen Little Big Town bei der Aufnahme des Tribute-Videos zu deren Sommer Hits "Pontoon". Die US-Medien schrieben dazu, dass Rucker der Country-Sänger mit dem sympathischsten Lachen sei.
Im Januar 2013 folgt sein drittes Country-Album, "True Believers".
