Pam Tillis, Tochter von Country-Legende Mel Tillis, machte im Musikgeschäft ihren eigenen Weg und stieg schließlich in den 90er Jahren zum modernen Country-Star auf.
Tillis wurde am 24. Juli 1957 in Plant City, Florida, geboren, aber wuchs überwiegend in Nashville auf. Sie begann im Alter von acht Jahren mit Klavierstunden, sattelte mit 12 auf Gitarre um und nahm als Jugendliche an zahlreichen Talentwettbewerben teil. Als Teenager einigermaßen wild und rebellisch, überlebte sie im Alter von 16 Jahren nur knapp einen Autounfall, der eine umfassende plastische Gesichtsrekonstruktion erforderlich machte. Glücklicherweise erholte sie sich vollständig und verfolgte mit großem Ehrgeiz ihre musikalische Karriere an der University of Tennessee, wo sie als Sängerin der High Country Swing Band (die Country Rock und Jug-Band-Musik spielte) sowie in einem Folk-Duo mit Ashley Cleveland auftrat. 1976 brach sie ihr Studium ab und arbeitete im Verlagshaus ihres Vaters, wo es ihr gelang, ihre Komposition "I'll Meet You on the Other Side of the Morning" bei Barbara Fairchild unterzubringen. Daneben gründete Sie eine eigene Backing Band, die bald in die Bay Area von San Francisco übersiedelte und sich in Freelight umbenannte. Die Band entwickelte einen innovativen Stil, basierend auf Jazz und Rock, nicht Country.
1979 jedoch kehrte Tillis nach Nashville zurück und trat als Backup-Sängerin zusammen mit ihrem Vater auf, während sie allein ihr erstes Kind großzog. Daneben war sie Leadsängerin einer R&B-Band und schrieb weiter Songs, von denen einige von Gloria Gaynor und Chaka Khan vertont wurden. Zusammen mit einer Reihe weiterer Sängerinnen und Songwriterinnen trat Tillis regelmäßig im Bluebird Cafe in Nashville auf, und Anfang der 80er Jahre wurde sie von Warner Brothers unter Vertrag genommen. Sie veröffentlichte 1983 ein Album, das poporientierte Above and Beyond the Doll of Cutey, und schaffte es im folgenden Jahr mit "Goodbye Highway" erstmals in die Charts. Eine Reihe weiterer Singles wurden bis 1987 veröffentlicht, aber keine schaffte es auch nur in die Top 50; trotzdem gelang es Tillis, sich als Songwriterin für Tree Publishing mit u.a. von Highway 101 und Conway Twitty aufgenommenen Kompositionen einen Namen zu machen.
In 1989 - demselben Jahr, in dem sie in einer Produktion von Jesus Christ Superstar in Tennessee auftrat - gelang ihr der Abschluss eines neuen Vertrages mit Arista. Tillis veröffentlichte ihr Label-Debüt, Put Yourself in My Place, in 1991, und ihre Lead Single "Don't Tell Me What to Do" schoss in die Top Five - der lang ersehnte Durchbruch. Von den insgesamt fünf Singles des Albums schafften es auch "One of Those Things" und "Maybe It Was Memphis" in die Top Ten (wie auch das Album selbst). Das Anschlussalbum Homeward Looking Angel (1992) war ebenso erfolgreich, und die Singles "Shake the Sugar Tree" und "Let That Pony Run" schafften es beide in die Top Five. 1994 coproduzierte Tillis ihr drittes Album für Arista, Sweetheart's Dance, dass sich als ihr bisher größter Erfolg erwies und ihr die ACM-Auszeichnung als "Female Vocalist of the Year" eintrug. "Spilled Perfume", "When You Walk in the Room" und "In Between Dances" schafften es sämtlich in die Top Five, und "Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life)" wurde ihre erste Nr. 1. Das Ende 1995 veröffentlichte All of This Love war das erste Album, das Tillis selbst produzierte, und trug ihr Top Ten-Platzierungen für "Deep Down" und "The River and the Highway" ein. Zwei neue Songs aus dem Sammelalbum Greatest Hits (1997) - "All the Good Ones Are Gone" und "Land of the Living" - schafften es ebenfalls in die Top Five.
Every Time (1998) spiegelte ihre gerade hinter sich gebrachte Scheidung von Songwriter Bob DiPiero wider und verschaffte ihr einen Beinahe-Top Ten-Hit mit "I Said a Prayer". Eine Umstrukturierung bei Arista verzögerte die Veröffentlichung von Thunder and Roses bis 2001. Tillis nutzte diese Zeit zu einem Auftritt in der Broadway-Show Smokey Joe's Cafe, einem Tribut an Leiber & Stoller. Thunder and Roses zeigte, dass Tillis' kommerzielle Anziehungskraft nachgelassen hatte, und es kam in der Folge zur Trennung von Arista. Sie kam an bei Epics Tochterlabel Lucky Dog und brachte dort 2002 ihr Debütalbum heraus: It's All Relative: Tillis Sings Tillis - eine Zusammenstellung von Songs ihres Vaters, mit der sie endlich sein Erbe zu ihren eigenen Bedingungen annahm.
