Die Contemporary-Country-Sängerin Martina McBride stieg Ende der neunziger Jahre zum Star auf, nachdem sie vom traditionalistischen Terrain in poppigere Gefilde gewechselt war.
McBride wurde 1966 als Martina Mariea Schiff in Sharon, Kansas, geboren und entdeckte Country durch ihren Vater, der Chef einer lokalen Band namens The Schifters war. Als Teenager stieg sie bei den Schifters als Sängerin und Keyboarderin ein. Nach der Highschool trat sie mit verschiedenen Bands in ganz Kansas auf. Sie heiratete Soundman John McBride und zog mit ihm 1990 nach Nashville. Während John dort für Künstler wie Charlie Daniels und Ricky Van Shelton tätig war, arbeitete Martina währenddessen als Demosängerin. Ein von ihrem Mann produziertes eigenes Demoband verhalf ihr schließlich 1991 zu einem Plattenvertrag bei RCA. Ungefähr zur selben Zeit wurde John von Garth Brooks als Production Manager engagiert, wodurch sich Martina die Möglichkeit bot, als Opener von Brooks auf Tournee zu gehen.
1992 erschien ihr Debütalbum "The Time Has Come", dessen Songs sowohl von traditionellem Honky-Tonk als auch vom progressiven Country-Folk beeinflusst waren. Mit dem pop-orientierten 93er Nachfolgewerk "The Way That I Am" schaffte sie dann den kommerziellen Durchbruch: Die Lead-Single "My Baby Loves Me" schoss in den Country-Charts bis auf Position 2. Das anrührende "Independence Day" wurde so etwas wie ihr Markenzeichen, und eine weitere Single, "Life #9", erreichte ebenfalls die Top Ten. Das 1995 veröffentlichte dritte Album "Wild Angels" bescherte McBride mit "Safe in the Arms of Love" einen zweiten Top-Five-Hit und 1996 mit dem Titelsong ihre erste Nummer 1. Mit ihrer 97er LP "Evolution" stieg sie erstmals in die Top Ten der Country-LP-Charts ein, und "Valentine", ihr Duett mit Jim Brickman, wurde nicht nur in den Country-Charts zu einem Top-Ten-Hit, sondern auch ihr erster großer Crossover-Erfolg in den Adult-Contemporary-Charts. "Evolution" warf mit "Happy Girl" und "Whatever You Say" noch zwei Nummer-2- und mit "A Broken Wing" und "Wrong Again" zwei weitere Nummer-1-Hits ab. McBride war mit diesem Album, das sich über zwei Millionen Mal verkaufte, zu einem veritablen Country-Star geworden.
Nachdem sie Ende 1998 ein Weihnachtsalbum veröffentlicht hatte, folgte 1999 das nächste reguläre Studioalbum "Emotion", dessen Lead-Single "I Love You" nicht nur in den Country-Charts an die Spitze schoss, sondern auch wieder den Sprung in Adult-Contemporary-Programme, nicht zu Letzt durch den Erfolg des Film "Runaway Bride - Die Braut die sich nicht traut", schaffte. Die drei Nachfolge-Singles "Love's the Only House", "There You Are" (beide Top Ten) und "It's My Time" waren ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich. 2001 erreichte McBride mit ihrer Greatest-Hits-Compilation erstmals Platz 1 der Country-LP-Charts und knackte sogar die Top Five der Pop-Charts. Die Compilation enthielt vier neue Tracks, die alle als Single veröffentlicht wurden. Dabei wurde "Blessed" zu einer weiteren Nummer 1, während "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" und "Where Would You Be" immerhin noch in die Top Ten kletterten.
