Travis Tritt

Travis Tritt war zu Beginn der Neunziger einer der wichtigsten neuen Country-Sänger und konnte sich gegen Garth Brooks, Clint Black und Alan Jackson durchaus behaupten. Er war der einzige, der keinen Hut trug und sich in bluesige Southern-Rock-Gefilde wagte. Zudem hob ihn sein Outlaw-Image von der Masse der übrigen Country-Interpreten zusätzlich ab. Anfang der neunziger Jahre erreichten mehrere seiner Alben Platinstatus. Zudem konnte er eine ganze Reihe von Top-Ten-Singles verbuchen, darunter drei Nummer-1-Hits.

Seine Liebe zur Musik entdeckte Tritt bereits als Kind. Mit acht Jahren brachte er sich das Gitarrespielen bei, mit vierzehn fing er an, Songs zu schreiben. Während Travis entschlossen war, eine Musikerkarriere einzuschlagen, waren seine Eltern nicht gerade begeistert. Seine Mutter hatte zwar nichts dagegen, dass er auftrat, wollte aber, dass er Gospel sang. Und für seinen Vater war Musik brotlose Kunst. Als er achtzehn wurde, versuchte er deshalb, sesshaft zu werden, zu arbeiten und eine Familie zu gründen. Es blieb jedoch beim Versuch: Noch bevor er 22 wurde, war er bereits zweimal verheiratet und wieder geschieden. Während er verschiedenen Jobs nachging, machte er weiter Musik. Als er in einem Unternehmen für Klimatechnik arbeitete, ermunterte ihn einer seiner Chefs, der Gitarre spielte und einst selbst als Musiker Karriere machen wollte, seine Träume wahr werden zu lassen. Tritt hängte daraufhin seinen Job an den Nagel und konzentrierte sich ganz auf seine musikalische Laufbahn.

Als ersten Schritt nahm er 1982 in einem privaten Studio ein Demotape auf. Das Studio gehörte Danny Davenport, der zufälligerweise bei Warner Brothers arbeitete. Davenport hörte Tritts Songs und war beeindruckt. Er beschloss, Tritt unter seine Fittiche zu nehmen. In den nächsten Jahren nahmen die beiden verschiedene Demobänder auf, und Tritt spielte regelmäßig im Honky-Tonk-Zirkel. Dabei entwickelte der Sänger einen eigenständigen Sound, indem er Honky-Tonk mit Elementen des Country- und Southern-Rock kombinierte.

1989 erhielt Tritt schließlich einen Vertrag bei Warner Brothers Nashville. Sein Debütalbum "Country Club" stand im Frühjahr 1990 in den Läden. Das Titelstück war zuvor bereits als Single ausgekoppelt worden und hatte sich zu einem Top-Ten-Hit entwickelt. Bereits kurz nach Erscheinen der LP galt Tritt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der New Country Music. Seine beiden nächsten Singles "Help Me Hold On" und "I'm Gonna Be Somebody" kletterten in den Charts bis auf Position 1 bzw. 2. Für das deutlich Rock'n'Roll-beeinflusste "Put Some Drive in Your Country" war dagegen auf Platz 4 Schluss, da es von den Radiostationen eher als Rocksong angesehen wurde und dementsprechend wenig Airplay erhielt.

Die Musikindustrie in Nashville stand Tritt trotz seines Erfolgs eher reserviert gegenüber. In seiner Musik und seiner Bühnenshow machte er zu starke Anleihen beim Rock'n'Roll, und sein Image passte nicht zu den Legionen neuer Country-Sänger, für die der Cowboy-Hut ein anscheinend unverzichtbares Accessoire darstellte. Trotzdem schaffte er mit seinem zweiten Album "It's All About to Change" 1991 den Durchbruch. Vor dessen Veröffentlichung hatte Tritt als Manager Ken Kragen angeheuert, der auch mit Lionel Richie, Trisha Yearwood, Kenny Rogers und We Are the World arbeitete. Kragen vermarktete Tritt sehr geschickt, und es gelang ihm, den Sänger sowohl bei den Country-Anhängern als auch beim Massenpublikum populär zu machen. Als Resultat erhielt "It's All About to Change" mehrfach Platin.

Tritts drittes Album "T-r-o-u-b-l-e" erschien 1992. Es konnte zwar den Erfolg seines Vorgängers nicht wiederholen, erreichte aber immerhin Goldstatus und warf mit "Can I Trust You With My Heart" einen Nummer-1-Hit ab. Mit dem 94er Werk "Ten Feet Tall & Bulletproof" zogen die Verkaufszahlen dann wieder an. Das Album erreichte Platinstatus, enthielt mit "Foolish Pride" einen weiteren Nummer-1-Hit und kletterte auch in den Pop-Charts bis auf Position 20. Im November 1995 erschien die Compilation "Greatest Hits: From the Beginning" und erhielt nach nur sechs Monaten ebenfalls Platin. 1996 folgte die LP "Restless Kind", zwei Jahre später das Album "No More Looking Over My Shoulder", der Titelsong stammt aus der Feder von Michael Peterson, und im Herbst 2000 schließlich "Down the Road I Go" und 2002 "Strong Enough". 2004 nahm Tritt als Abgesandter der USA an dem G8 treffen in den USA teil.

2005 verlies Travis Tritt nach 5 Jahren Columbia Records Nashville und unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag beim Independent-Label Category 5 Records.
