Das vor allem für seine schönen Harmonien bekannte Country-Trio Rascal Flatts besteht aus Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus und Joe Don Rooney. Demarcus und Levox - Cousins zweiten Grades aus Columbus, Ohio - gründeten die Gruppe und holten später bei einem Gig in Printer's Alley in Nashville den aus Picher, Oklahoma, stammenden Rooney als Ersatzgitarristen hinzu.
Demarcus und Rooney spielten zu dieser Zeit auch in der Band von Country-Star Chely Wright. Der Rest ist Geschichte. Das Trio unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei Lyric Street Records (gehört zur Walt Disney Company) und nahm sein selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum auf, einen eklektischen Mix aus Country, Pop, R&B und anderen Stilen. Erste Hitsingle der Gruppe wurde "Praying' for Daylight", schon bald gefolgt von "Everyday Love", das fast genauso viel Lob einheimste.
Das zweite Album der Band, "Melt", erschien im Oktober 2002. Durch den Erfolg der ersten Single-Auskoppelung "These Days" verkaufte es sich binnen acht Wochen eine Millionen Mal.
Auf "Melt" befindet sich auch der Song "Mayberry", der es auf Platz 1 der Billboard Country Single Charts schaffte. Mayberry ist eine fiktive Stadt, die im Bundesstaat North Carolina liegt. Die Stadt wurde von Andy Griffith ("Madlock") für seine erste Fernsehshow "The Andy Griffith Show" etwickelt. Die Fernsehserie lief von 1960 bis 1968 auf dem amerikanischen Fernsehsender CBS. Die Show war in den USA sehr beliebt. Da die Serie das ruhige Leben einer Kleinstadt wiedergibt und durch die Beliebtheit der Serie ist das Wort Mayberry in den Sprachgebrauch der Amerikaner eingegangen für das ruhige Leben in einer Kleinstadt. Anspielungen finden sich "Eine schrecklich nette Familie" als Al Bundy mit seinem Sohn fischen geht und Bud einen angeklebten Schwanz verliert, in der vierten Saison von "Akte X - Die unglaublichen Fälle des FBI" als Mulder das Leben in einer kleinen Stadt lobt und sagt "It's like living in Mayberry" und der Sherriff der Stadt sich als Andy Taylor (so war auch der Rollenname von Andy Griffith, der in Mayberry den Sheriff spielte) vorstellte und zu guter Letzt in der Fernsehserie "Boston Legal" als Alan Shore und denny Crane aus ihrem Büro mit Angelruten durch die Straßen von Boston gehen.
2004 veröffentlichten Rascal Flatts ihr bisher erfolgreichstes Album "Feels Like Today" gefolgt von dem 2006er Album "Me and My Gang", das sogar in Deutschland veröffentlicht wurde. Doch in Deutschland standen die Sterne nicht gut, denn die CD erschien parallel zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft und stand wie Blei in den Regalen. Das Nachfolge-Album "Still Feels Good" wurde in Deutschland nicht mehr veröffentlicht.
Privat sind alle drei Bandmitglieder verheiratet. Jay DeMarcus hat die ehemalige Miss Tenessee, Allison Alderson, gehiratet.
