Taylor Swift wurde 2006 zu einem der hellsten (und jüngsten) Gesichter des Country-Pop, als die 16-jährige Sängerin ihr erstes Album herausbrachte. Auch wenn sie der amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit noch unbekannt war, ist Swift bereits seit frühester Kindheit aufgetreten, wobei sie durch ihre Opern singende Großmutter inspiriert und unterstützt wurde.
Mit 11 sang sie "The Star-Spangled Banner" vor einem Spiel der Philadelphia 76ers; im darauffolgenden Jahr begann sie mehrere Stunden pro Tag Gitarre zu üben, bis ihre Finger bluteten. Die Eltern erkannte den Willen ihrer Tochter und fuhren nun regelmäßig nach Nashville, TN, damit Swift dort auftreten und Songwriter aus der Region kennenlernen konnte. Die Familie entschied sich, aus ihrer Heimat Pennsylvania in einen Vorort von Nashville zu ziehen, wodurch Swifts Karriere beschleunigt wurde.
Bei einem Auftritt im intimen Bluebird Café in Nashville wurde Scott Borchetta, ein Veteran der Musikindustrie, auf Swift aufmerksam und nahm sie für sein neu gegründetes Label unter Vertrag. Swift wurde so Teil des Artist-Roster bei Big Machine Records und veröffentlichte ihre Debüt-Single, "Tim McGraw", im August 2006. Der Song wurde aus ihrer Erfahrung als von Liebeskummer geplagte High-School-Schülerin geboren, ein Thema, das Swift auf ihrem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum immer wieder aufgreift.
Gegen Ende des Jahres 2008 wurde die junge Songwriterin Taylor Swift plötzlich zum Star, als sie eine Handvoll Hits landete (fünf aufeinanderfolgende Top-10-Singles, ein neuer Rekord für eine Solokünstlerin), die ihr mehrfaches Platin einbrachten. Darüber hinaus wurde Swift für den Grammy in der Kategorie Best New Artist nominiert, einen Preis, bei dem sie sich gegen keine geringere als Amy Winehouse geschlagen geben musste.
Zwei nachfolgende EPs- "Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection" und "Beautiful Eyes" "” haben das Interesse an Swift wach gehalten und die Nachfrage nach ihrem neuesten Schülerwerk, "Fearless", das im November 2008 herauskam, angekurbelt.
Im November 2008 unterschrieb Big Machine Records einen internationalen Vertriebsvertrag mit Universal Music. Der Major veröffentlicht die internationale Version von "Fearless" im April 2009 in Europa. Bei der internationalen Version wurden kleinere musikalische Veränderungen vorgenommen, zum Beispiel die Fiddle und das Banjo etwas leiser gemacht. Außerdem wurden Songs von dem selbstbetitelten Debüt-Album mit auf die neue CD gepackt. Die erste internationale Single war "Love Song".
Ihr Schauspiel-Debüt gab Swift in der Fernsehserie "CSI: Den Tätern auf der Spur". Sie spielte Haley Jones in der Folge "Turn, Turn, Turn" (9. Staffel, 16. Folge), die am 5. März 2009 in den USA ausgestrahlt wurde.
